The doors opened, the room went quiet, and every face turned toward me
I had crossed an ocean with two horns growing straight out of my forehead
Some of you stared
Some of you whispered
Some of you tried very hard to pretend you weren't staring at all

I've seen that look before
I brought it with me from Japan through the airport lights, the customs line, the crowded
terminal and the first cold street where nobody knew my name. By the time I reached you
people were already turning around for a second look, pulling out their phones and whisp
to whoever stood beside them. Is she wearing a costume? Are those horns real? Should w
her inside? Ask whatever you like. I grew up walking through hallways full of the same
questions, so your surprised little faces aren’t going to ruin my night
You think the strangest thing in this room is growing out of my forehead, but you haven’
heard what came out of my lungs yet. You haven’t felt my voice hit the back wall, watche
glasses tremble behind the bar or heard the low end roll beneath your feet hard enough t
make the whole building remember my name
I came from Japan and landed in your city with horns on my head, a mic in my hand and
enough sound to shake every window between this stage and the street. Keep looking if y
need to; I’m used to being the first thing in the room nobody understands. But when th
comes down and my voice comes through, those horns won’t be the reason you remem
me. Listen closely. I didn’t travel this far to blend in
The DJ saw me coming and reached for the next track, but I told him to leave the silence
where it was. I wanted to hear the room before I changed it. The woman by the speakers
stopped talking. The guy at the bar turned his chair around. Somebody near the entrance
laughed until I looked directly at him, and suddenly the joke wasn’t funny enough to fin
Good. Now everybody’s paying attention
I don’t need you to understand where oni come from, memorize some old story or prete
you know Japan because you watched a few shows. All you need to know is that I crossed
world to put this sound in front of you, and once it starts, nobody in this room gets to act
they were somewhere else when it happened
Look at the horns now, because in another ten seconds the lights will drop, the bass will h
